About the book

The Tao Te Ching, in a few lines.

The Tao Te Ching (also spelled Tao De Ching or Dao De Jing) is the Book of the Way, one of the most read books of Chinese philosophy and the heart of Taoism. The name means "The Book of the Way and Its Power": Tao is the way, Te is virtue or inner power, and Ching is a classic book.

Lao Tzu (Laozi) means "Old Master". The story says he kept records at the royal court, grew tired of city life and rode west on an ox. A border guard asked him to write down his wisdom before he left, and the result is this book.

It gives pictures, not rules: water that wins by being soft, a bowl that is useful because it is empty, a leader who is barely noticed when the work is done.
